INTERNATIONAL PATIENTS

See a doctor in Sweden without a personnummer

Can I see a doctor in Sweden without a personnummer or BankID?

Yes. Private clinics don’t need a personnummer or BankID. At Mindr you can see an English-speaking doctor online through TouristDr for 2,500 SEK, or at our clinics in central Gothenburg (Kyrkogatan 44) and Stockholm (Kammakargatan 66) for 3,200 SEK, usually on the same day. The receipt and documents for your insurance are included.

Public healthcare in Sweden is built around the personnummer and BankID. You need them to book through 1177, to register at a vårdcentral and to use most digital health services. Private care works differently: you book with your name and phone number, show your passport or ID at the visit, and pay directly.

This page explains your options, what they cost and how to book. If you need a doctor now, send a booking request. During opening hours we usually reply within 15 minutes.

Why International Patients Struggle to Access Swedish Healthcare

Sweden’s public healthcare system is among the most developed in the world, but it is built around a digital identity infrastructure that most international visitors simply cannot access. At the centre of this system is the personnummer — a unique national identification number assigned to residents registered in Sweden’s population register — and BankID, Sweden’s primary digital ID tool, which requires both a personnummer and a Swedish bank account.

Without these, you cannot book appointments through 1177.se, cannot access the digital patient portal, and in many cases cannot register at a public care centre at all. This is not a policy failure — it is a system designed for residents, not visitors. For tourists, expats in their first weeks, Erasmus students, business travelers, and anyone who has recently arrived, the result is the same: the public system is effectively closed.

Since the moment I came in they were so nice to me. I needed to make some tests and they were so helpful, they even did some simple test right there in order to dismiss any big infection which should be treated right away. They booked my sample appointment directly with the hospital, so I did not need to worry about any bureaucracy and paper work.

English version below. English: I needed a thyroid ultrasound and blood tests following surgery I had in Denmark. Because the procedure was performed abroad, private endocrinology clinics in Göteborg refused to accept me, and I had to wait two months for an appointment at Sahlgrenska. I contacted Mindr and received exactly the help I needed—an appointment and blood tests the very next day, and an ultrasound within 48 hours of my call. After the tests, Dr. Toha took the time to go through the results with me and explained everything clearly. I couldn’t be happier.
